This pen was turned from the Teakwood deck of USS California (BB-44). On December 7, 1941, she was sent to the bottom of Pearl Harbor. 104 men were killed and four brave sailors were awarded the Medal of Honor. She would be raised and go on to fight in many battles across the Pacific. As I turned the beautiful piece of Teak, the shop filled with an aroma that can only be described as old. All sailors know that ships have souls, and though the ship is gone, her soul lives on.
The aged old forest tree specimen has vibrant and rich grain to it, and I buffed it to a high gloss finish. The pen kit is nautical and made from antiqued brass. It is the perfect gift for a Navy veteran, like myself, or for anyone who loves sailing, the ocean, or things with a historical past. The pen has a solid and heavy feel to it. It uses Parker style refills, which are widely available. It ships in the gift box shown in the photos, along with certificate of authenticity explaining the origins of the wood. By default, I engrave "USS California (BB-44)." You may change that or add to it via personalization.
